Good Botox results aren't just about a skilled injection — the first 24 hours afterward matter too. The good news: aftercare is simple, and there's no real downtime. At USA Aesthetics, Nidia Garcia, ARNP sends every client home with clear instructions, and this guide walks through exactly what to do (and what to skip) so your results settle in smoothly. Individual results vary.
The first 24 hours: the essentials
These are the habits that protect your results right after treatment:
- Do stay upright for about 4 hours — avoid lying flat or bending over for long periods.
- Do gently exercise your face (a few natural frowns and brow raises) in the first hour, if your provider suggests it — it can help the product settle.
- Don't rub, massage, or apply pressure to the treated areas, including facials or microdermabrasion.
- Don't do strenuous exercise for 24 hours — elevated blood flow can increase swelling or bruising.
- Don't drink alcohol for 24 hours, since it can thin the blood and worsen bruising.
- Don't lie face-down or wear tight headwear that presses on the area.
Makeup, heat, and the first week
After the initial day, you can mostly return to normal — with a few sensible limits:
- Makeup: wait about 24 hours, then apply gently with clean hands or a clean brush.
- Heat: skip saunas, hot tubs, steam rooms, and intense sun for 24–48 hours.
- Sleep: try to sleep on your back the first night if you can.
- Skincare: resume your routine after a day; hold off on retinoids or strong actives for 24 hours.
- Other treatments: wait on facials, microneedling, or laser in the treated area until your provider clears you.
When you'll see results
Botox usually starts working in 1–3 days, with the full effect around 7–14 days — so don't judge your result on day two. For the complete timeline and how long it lasts, see our guide on how long Botox lasts. If you notice a small area that needs balancing at your two-week mark, that's normal; just let us know.
How to avoid bruising
A little pinpoint bruising is possible with any injection. To minimize it, avoid alcohol and blood-thinning supplements like fish oil, vitamin E, and high-dose NSAIDs for a day or two beforehand (never stop prescribed medication without talking to your doctor). A cool compress afterward can help. Most bruising is minor and fades within a few days, and arnica can speed things along.
Aftercare myths to ignore
You don't need to avoid flying, you don't have to stay perfectly still all day, and a normal facial workout won't "use up" your Botox. The real list is short: stay upright for a few hours, skip the gym and alcohol for a day, and don't rub the area. That's it.
