Beautiful lip filler results are part technique, part aftercare. A little swelling and tenderness is completely normal for the first day or two — how you handle that window helps your lips settle smoothly and comfortably. At USA Aesthetics, Nidia Garcia, ARNP sends you home with clear instructions; here's the simple plan. Individual results vary.
The first 24–48 hours
- Do ice gently with a clean, wrapped cold pack to ease swelling — light contact, no pressure.
- Do sleep with your head elevated the first night or two to reduce morning puffiness.
- Do stay hydrated and stick to soft, easy foods at first.
- Don't do strenuous exercise for 24–48 hours — increased blood flow worsens swelling and bruising.
- Don't drink alcohol for 24 hours; it thins the blood and increases bruising.
- Don't expose lips to heat — skip saunas, hot tubs, and intense sun for a couple of days.
- Don't press, massage, or pucker hard (and avoid heavy kissing) while things settle, unless your provider shows you a specific technique.
Managing swelling and bruising
Swelling usually peaks at 24–48 hours and then steadily improves. Cool compresses, sleeping elevated, and avoiding salt, alcohol, and intense workouts all help. Minor bruising can happen with any injection; arnica and time take care of it. To reduce bruising risk, avoid blood-thinning supplements (fish oil, vitamin E, high-dose NSAIDs) for a day or two beforehand — never stop prescribed medication without your doctor.
When your lips settle
Don't judge your final result in the first few days — lips can look bigger or slightly uneven while swollen. Most swelling resolves within about a week, and lips fully settle by around two weeks. If anything looks asymmetric once you're fully settled, let us know; small refinements are easy. For how long your results last before a touch-up, see how long lip fillers last.
Makeup, lipstick, and brushing
Wait about 24 hours before applying lipstick or lip products, and use clean applicators to keep the area clean while tiny injection points close. Brush your teeth gently and be careful around the lips for the first day.
